Why does it matter what phrases you target online?

Recently we were asked to check out a website that a friend had had developed.   They had decided to go with another web company as they had been convincing in their sales pitch and promised the earth for little cost.

So what did we find when we checked out the finished product?

Here is the thing right:

You are a small business, trying to find new income streams.   You know the internet is a medium that is well used by your customers so how do you find them? Your business is Interior design and you are based in Wimbledon.   This is a very wealthy area and a lot of businesses in that area have some connection with interior design, kitchens etc. Now Wimbledon is near London so that makes sense, lets also target London.

The summary of this is that the web company took these basic facts and targetted "Interior design wimbledon/london" as the primary phrase.

WHY WHY WHY?

This word/phrase is way out of your league.  You have a new website, haven't build any link building campaign, have no experience of online marketing and have decided to target a phrase that is heavily competed for with words like London in it.

It just won't work, never ever!
