Search results and how people view them in google

When you build your site and see it move within google you need to decide how valuable it  is to you to find yourself on page 1 or page 2 and the various positions within those pages. If it matters and your competitors are being found in better positions than you, then it is worth reading this page to find out what your clients do online whilst viewing.

The study

  • 2005 studies were run and it was found that people looked through many of the search results before clicking on one. The distribution of attention using Google can be seen in the heatmap above.
  • 2008 studies with over 30 participants, it is seen that the clients focus is on the top 5 positions and the majority of clicks  are upon the top 3 results (discounting sponsored links)
  • Cornell University found that over 79% of all clicks were applied to the top 3 positions
  • When viewers were asked what they would do when they couldn't find a result, 87% said they would modify their search term
  • 87% said that Google was the search engine they would use, with 97% saying they use nothing else.

What this clearly shows us is that Google has become a habit and people  have learned it and trained themselves to know its features and process.
